No Layoffs? Do The Math! And Consider The Effects!
Mayor Pavia has been quoted several times as saying that the sixty or so jobs that will be lost by the Stamford Fire & Rescue Department to the new Stamford Volunteer Fire Department would be lost through attrition. On average, the Stamford Fire & Rescue Department has about five members who retire each year. At that rate, it would take twelve years to bring our department down to the number of members Mr Pavia wants us at! Do you really think that the Mayor and/or the Board of Reps will not look at the extra manpower at some point during those twelve years and see layoffs as a way of bridging a budget deficit?
The other major problem with his plan to lose those jobs through attrition is the large generation gap it will cause. The generation gap is NOT just an “age” issue, it will be an “EXPERIENCE” issue. If there are no new hires for twelve years, it will severely disrupt the natural flow of organization development within our Fire Department. That affects, not only the safety of our Firefighters, but also the City of Stamford as a whole.
Did the mayor really think his entire plan through? His solutions may sound benign in words, but when thought through, spell disaster for the Stamford Fire & Rescue Department as well the citizens of Stamford.
