Pavia’s fire plan under scrutiny
The proposed new plan for fire services in the city, including the creation of a new taxing district and up to $300 tax increases for residents, has fire officials wondering how the money will be spent.
The plan would merge four of the five city’s volunteer companies into the new Stamford Volunteer Fire Department. The Glenbrook Fire Department will remain a separate entity, and will not be absorbed into Stamford Fire & Rescue as originally proposed.
Under this proposal, a new Stamford Fire Taxing District would also be created, with a management structure that would include a president, vice president, clerk, treasurer and five directors.
“The existing structure is in place, with Stamford Fire & Rescue and five volunteer companies, all with distinct coverage districts,” Pavia said last week. “The Fire (Protection Resolution) Task Force did a great job sorting through all the legal components. The end game is a higher level of standardized fire protection in the city.”
Pavia’s plan would also organize the city’s volunteer fire services under a single line of command, capitalize on combined facilities, resources, and paid and volunteer personnel.
Chief Frank Passero from Glenbrook, who said his house is “going to stay the way we are,” believes residents will have problems with a tax hike from $100 to $300 per homeowner.
