Pavia discloses (more) details on fire plan
STAMFORD — Mayor Michael Pavia earlier this month submitted answers to several questions the Board of Representatives Public Safety Committee posed in late September about his proposed fire plan and he urged city representatives to quicken its approval process by scheduling a public hearing as soon as possible.
The 17 questions centered on hiring practices, funding sources and tax implications. Only one question went unanswered. The mayor refused to provide a financial analysis of a proposal to expand the Stamford Fire & Rescue Department, which will likely irk critics of the mayor’s plan to consolidate four of the city’s five volunteer-run fire departments into a new organization called theStamford Volunteer Fire Department. It could further stall its approval.
More than a year after announcing a plan to consolidate four of the city’s five volunteer fire departments, Pavia is seeking Board of Representatives approval of a five-year, $43.8 million service contract between the city and the Turn of River, Long Ridge, Springdale and Belltown fire departments. The contract allows the departments to consolidate into a joint venture and to hire 59 new employees, including firefighters, fire marshals and a full-time chief.
In a letter responding to several questions from a Board of Representatives meeting in September, Pavia provided a line-by-line breakdown of expenses the new fire department would incur over the next five years and answered inquiries over other costs, including fire hydrant maintenance and workers’ compensation.
